Coltrane is one of the true giants of jazz who has embedded jazz into our consciousness as the powerful art form it is. Born in Hamlet, N.C., raised in Highpoint, he later moved to Philadelphia before a stint in the service. Soon after, Coltrane took his place on the world stage as a jazz master nurtured along with important and productive collaborations with others like Miles and Monk.

This session will present a stimulating presentation of Coltrane and his influence on jazz and American culture at large. Presenters include Fred Joiner, a published poet and student of Coltrane’s legacy who will present elements of current scholarship on Coltrane as well as some vintage footage of the master at work. Paul Carr, a D.C. jazz great himself who has studied Coltrane’s music and made it an important part of his own artistry, will demonstrate some of the nuance of Coltrane’s style. Paul directs the Jazz Academy Orchestra, his youth jazz project as well as the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival; he also performs regularly at Jazz Night at Westminster.

Thinking About Jazz is a bi-monthly presentation and discussion on select topics concerning our great art form of jazz. It is a FREE event; refreshments, door prizes and great conversation are always provided.

DOCUMENTS alternative guide through dc underground

Exhibition Dates: June 10 – July 22, 2011

DOCUMENTS: alternative guide to dc underground is a collaborative project between Ayodamola Okunseinde and Yulia Graham investigating subjects of identity through photographic and physically interactive portraits. Based on the likenesses of artists from the DC metro area, the objective of this project is to chronicle connections between artists, their environment, personalities and work through portraiture. The pieces in DOCUMENT range from black & white digital prints to installations where the audience in directed to play a part in the presentation of the portraits. The collective works of the project also serves as a selected educational archive of the dc underground art scene in the recent years.

Honfleur Gallery presents Wavelengths, an exhibition of four installation artists, curated by microWave project. These four artists have been invited to create installations throughout the gallery’s two-story space, based on their interpretation of the word "wavelength." In addition to this exhibition, we will have a hands-on community installation project to help raise awareness and funds for those affected by Japan’s recent Tsunami and Earthquake disaster.

June 2-30 : Knowledge Commons DC: taught anywhere for everyone by anyone

A free school for thinkers, doers, tinkerers and those passionate about something, anything and everything. During June 2011, cross-disciplinary, all-ages classes will be taught by and for DC’s residents throughout the entire city. Galleries, houses, cafes, grocery stores, museums, parks, and kitchens will serve as school houses for a month of classes. June 3-5 : Arts on the Avenue at Blank Space SE, 1922 MLK JR Ave SE

Blank Space SE will host Arts on the Avenue during the weekend of June 3rd- 5th. The free event will feature five local visual artists – Melanie Douglass, J’Nell Jordan, Johnnie Bess, Art by Liz and Greg Slade. The exhibit will open Friday afternoon and run until Sunday afternoon. The Friday evening opening reception will be co-hosted by the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts. Saturday’s schedule will include an afternoon discussion on art collecting, including a framing workshop as well as musical presentation curated by WPFW Midday Jazz host and Blank Space SE neighbor, Keanna Faircloth. The evening will culminate with a poetry extravaganza hosted by Gowri K. New Deadline for ART BEHIND THE ART : Call to Photographers

In collaboration with Silent Code Features, The ARCH Social Arts Project (ASAP,) a project of the ARCH Development Corporation, is pleased to announce a call to photographers to be part of an exciting exhibition capturing the spirit of the film industry in Washington, D.C. and surrounding the metro area. ASAP is seeking photographic film stills and behind the scenes photography for exhibition on September 2011. What a Woman Can Do With a Camera: The Art and Work of Frances Benjamin Johnston

Over her long career, photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) produced a broad array of works. In addition to running a successful portrait studio in Washington, D.C., she worked on projects ranging from a pictorial survey of Washington, D.C. public schools to an extensive study of Southern architecture.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Residence Makeda Best examines the photographer’s early work, writings about photography in conjunction with contemporary art and debates about the role of women in society. She also outlines Johnston’s singular creative vision that combined exploring the distinct rhetorical strategies of photography and the creative possibilities of the social document.

Join ARCH’s Artists in Residency, Kathryn Zazenski & Khánh H. Lê, along with Hamiltonian Alumnus, Michael Iacovone, for a panel discussion at Hamiltonian Gallery. 

All three artists create work where community involvement is integral and essential to their practice. The panelists will speak about their experiences in engaging communities, the parameters they establish to do so, and why this level of public involvement is important. Join us for the panel discussion on Wednesday, April 27th, 7:00pm.

May 18 : Joshua Yospyn at Vivid Solutions DC Print Lab 

 

“A Crash Course in Portrait Lighting” will be taught by Worn Magazine photographer, Joshua Yospyn, on Wednesday, May 18th from 7-10pm. It’s a hands-on session and attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras. Joshua will be instructing attendees in basic portrait lighting set-ups including strobes and on-camera flash. The workshop is $15.00 per person. Registration and a non-refundable payment are required in advance. Space in the workshop is limited to 10 participants and will sell out quickly!

In recent years, civil rights historians have challenged the traditional narrative that separated the history of black Americans from the rest of the world and depicted the so-called “race question” in the United States as a purely domestic problem. In his lecture, Manfred Berg will take a critical look at the new transnational and global history of the black freedom struggle probing its achievements and limits.
